Staff and community members gathered on Saturday, April 29th for the first Cinderella Prom Project in Huron’s history. The Harris Farms Boys & Girls Club invited high school students to shop, get ready, and take photos at the Club the day of the prom. Students were able to pick out their entire outfit thanks to multiple donations from all around Fresno County. Local professionals donated their time and talents to help get young people prom ready for their big night. The girls had their hair and make-up done and the guys were able to get a haircut. Lastly, they took photos with fresh corsages & boutonnieres donated by a local flower shop.

Prior to the event Anastasia, age 16, said, “It’s going to help a lot especially since my mom has five kids and she is not working right now.”

According to USA Today, the average cost for prom is $600 per student, some spending up to $2,000 in the US.

“I like that my parents don’t have to spend $400 on prom. This Club has done so much for me,” said Brian, age 18.

Brian’s parents work in agriculture and during the rainy seasons, they are without work, effecting their ability to pay for events like prom. Many Club members in the Huron area have the same situation.

When Club staff approached community members with this idea they were eager to help and that is something we are very grateful for. Moments like this build trustworthy relationships and help give young people the opportunity to participate in special events.

The second Cinderella Prom Project took place at Avenal High School on May 20th.
